Notes for artists who wish
to submit work for consideration
When & Where?
The selection committee sits at the beginning of each year in early
January to select artists from the submissions we receive for the coming
year. If you would like to be considered then your submission needs
to be with our Exhibitions Secretary, Jan Martin, at 31, Chediston Street,
Halesworth, Suffolk by December 31st.
How?
These notes are the opinions of one of our selection committee based
on six years of selecting work. Last year we received almost one hundred
submissions from artists. Unfortunately many artists made it very difficult
for us to assess their work and these notes are designed to help artists
make their submissions as good as possible.
Photography of work
About a dozen good quality colour prints or slides work best for us.
Good, clear in-focus images showing your work at its best and giving
us a good idea about the colours and textures of the work. Some indication
of the scale of work is also important either on the slide or back of
the print or on an acompanying list of works. Indications of materials
and technique are also helpful.
We have found digital print-outs to be much more problematic. Print-outs
onto normal typing paper are often of such poor quality that it is very
difficult to discern the original colours and textures of the art works.
Digital images need to be of a high resolution initially and then printed
out on photo paper to give a good clear image. You can take digital
images on a disc to a photographic processors such as Anglia Photographic
in Halesworth or Wells in Southwold or branches of Boots or Jessops
and they can print out your images on photographic paper which looks
good and costs no more than normal photographic printing or printing
them yourself on an inkjet printer.
We are happy to view digital images of work submitted on CD. Again
the images need to be of a good quality and some indication of the size
of the works is very helpful. Powerpoint and other sorts of slide show
are always nice too.
Statements
A short statement about your work with a brief CV is also helpful. Some
indication of any art education and any previous exhibitions can be
helpful though not a neccessity by any means!
Websites
We have not really found it practical to accept websites as submissions
from artists. If you have a website then please let us know as part
of your submission but we cannot really view a website as the whole
of a submission. Printing out large numbers of images is not really
feasible and we have found it difficult to view websites as a group.
Currently we would prefer submissions delivered in a form that is more
easily viewable by a group meeting together. Why not make up a CD of
images instead? Or copy all of your website onto a disc. We have found
this practicable as it does not involve following links over a dial-up
connection. If successful in getting a show we will be happy to add
a link to your website from this one of course.
Good luck and we look forward to hearing from you.
